Seeing a rat or mouse is often treated as the beginning of a rodent problem. In reality, it may be the first visible sign of activity that has been happening for weeks. Rodents prefer concealed routes through roof spaces, wall cavities, garages and the gaps behind cupboards, which allows damage to build quietly.
The longer they remain undetected, the more time they have to gnaw, contaminate stored areas and establish nests. Knowing what happens out of sight can help homeowners act before a minor entry point becomes an expensive problem.
Chewed Wiring Can Create a Serious Risk
Rodents gnaw because their front teeth continue growing. Electrical cables, plastic pipes, timber, packaging and insulation can all be damaged in the process. Wiring is the greatest concern because exposed or weakened cables may cause power faults and increase the risk of an electrical fire.

Simply removing visible droppings does not solve the access problem, and dry sweeping can spread contaminated dust. Small Clues Often Point to a Larger Problem
Scratching after dark, droppings, greasy marks along walls, gnawed packaging and unusual pet behaviour can all indicate rodents. A small hole around a pipe, a gap beneath a door or an opening at the roofline may be enough for them to enter and move through the building.
An inspection should do more than confirm that rodents are present. It should identify likely entry points, assess how widespread the activity is and look for damage that may need attention. Traps or bait alone will not provide a lasting answer if the routes into the property remain open.
